Does it really count as a novella? At nearly 200 pages, it’s rather sizeable, especially for a graphic novel.
Anyway, I don’t think Seth cares about such fine details. The man’s a liar. A liar of the best possible sort, the one who messes with an audience expertly. I had no idea that he invented the subject of his pseudobiographical counterpart’s obsession. But then, why would I? I don’t know much about classic cartoonists. Seth seems to be an expert though. His own style is very classic, neat, with clean lines, rendering minimal faces and maximal surroundings. His protagonist is also a cartoonist. A rather maudlin chain smoker who lives in the 80s, dresses decades earlier, and mopes around, wallowing in his own sadness. Also, he is obsessed with finding out as much as he can about a mysterious cartoonist whose work he comes across in old publications. Not the most engaging of protagonists, way too whiny for one thing, so not the most engaging of reading material, but decent enough. Educated me somewhat on the subject of cartoons and cartoonists, which was apparently a solidly male game. Maybe it’s changed since.
